The Buteyko Breathing Technique for Asthma

The buteyko breathing technique is a very simple and highly effective method to get relief from the symptoms of asthma. Listed here are the key steps you need to follow for this technique.

Step 1- First, breathe shallow for three minutes. To learn shallow breathing, do the follow the below steps:

  • Sit in front of a mirror. Place your finger under your nose
  • Keep a hand on your belly and inhale
  • Only the hand on your stomach should move, not your chest
  • Keeping your mouth closed, use only your nose to breathe
  • Use only your diaphragm and not your chest to breathe
  • As you exhale, your stomach should move down to its normal position
  • Your breathing should be so shallow, that you should not feel much of air moving · Do this for three minutes

Step 2 -Now take the ‘Control Pause’ Breathing Test. To do this, simply take 2 normal breaths and then breathe out. Note down the time for which you could control the pause. Your ultimate goal is that you should be able to hold out at least for 60 seconds.

Step 3- Again, breathe shallow for 3 minutes.

Step 4- Take a normal breath and exhale, but slowly. Pinch your nose and hold your breath, at least for 20 seconds. Inhale at a normal pace.

Step 5- Breathe shallow for another 3 minutes

Step 6- Take a normal breath and exhale, but slowly. Pinch your nose and hold your breath, this time at least for 30 seconds. Inhale at a normal pace.

Step 7- Breathe shallow for another 3 minutes.

Step 8- Now repeat Step 6 and try to hold for at least 40 seconds this time.

Step 9- Do shallow breathing for another 3 minutes.

Step 10- Now measure your Control Pause time again. It should be longer than the first duration you measured in the beginning of the test.
