How to Survive Depression

How to survive depression and finding the best cure for depression are questions that can only be answered on an
individual basis as each sufferer will have their own unique symptoms of depression. That said there are some
common characteristics associated with the symptoms of depression that we will look at now.
We will also take a quick look at a definition of depression, some common signs of depression and a trip through
what causes depression. By doing this it will hopefully give you a greater understanding of the condition and help
you to survive depression.
Definition of Depression

Depression may be defined as but not limited to “A debilitating illness that can make you feel powerless,
hopeless, sorrowful, guilt and anger”.
Depression Signs & Depression Symptoms

Signs of depression could include a reduced desire to socialize or communicate and relationship problems
developing with family and friends causing social isolation which can lead to a deepening of the condition.
Depression symptoms may include problems sleeping, low energy levels, fatigue, irritability, low self esteem,
sadness, feelings of failure, loss of pleasure, self dislike, poor concentration and a lack of interest in sex.
Severely depressed people may have thoughts of self injury or self harm. Depression symptoms are often placed
into three categories of mild, moderate and severe. It can sometimes be difficult to know which of these types of
depression you may have.
With this in mind I have provided a link at the bottom of this page which will give you information on one of
the most universally used tests designed to measure the severity of depression. The test was created by Dr Aaron
Beck and is acknowledged as the Beck depression inventory or the Beck depression scale. If you would like to take
the Beck depression inventory just click on the corresponding link at the bottom of the page.

What Causes Depression?

As mentioned above to help survive depression it is important to find out what causes depression in the first
place. Depression can be caused by many things such as situational events or may happen for psychological reasons.
Examples of these may be the death of a close relative or continued stress at work. When no recognizable
psychological or situational event can be found it is worth looking at diet and nutrition which are covered on the
next page.
Before we look at some anti depression foods allow me to explain about a happiness chemical which has been found
to be lacking in sufferers of depression and linked to being a cause of depression.
Okay I hope you've got your thinking cap on as we are about to get technical! It is widely accepted that
Neurotransmitters (chemicals that transmit information to the brain) are deeply connected to what causes
depression. Especially a chemical called serotonin.
Serotonin is known as a feel good chemical and when released in the brain it can lift your mood and make you
feel happy and full of life. Low levels of serotonin have been linked to not only causing depression but also
anxiety ,obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), aggressive behavior and cravings.
So how is Serotonin Created?

Serotonin is produced from an amino acid known as 5-hydroxytryptophan also known as 5-htp. In its turn 5-htp is
made from another amino acid called tryptophan both can be found in various foods and 5-hydroxytryptophan can also
be brought as a herbal remedy. In order for 5-htp and tryptophan to work they need the catalysts that turn them
into neurotransmitters these include B vitamins, zinc, magnesium and omega 3.These can also be found in foods or
brought as supplements. Once all these requirements have been met (phew) the feel good chemical serotonin is
made.
