What Causes Arthritis?

While looking at what causes arthritis we will also take a look at the two main types of
arthritis
and some common symptoms for each.
Types of Arthritis

There are many Types of arthritis, rheumatoid and osteoarthritis
being the most common. In the United Kingdom alone over fifty percent of people above the age of sixty five suffer
from some form of the condition.
Common Symptoms for Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory condition which tends to affect the smaller joints
such as the wrists, ankles, knees and fingers. It is also an autoimmune condition meaning that the immune system
has gone wrong and has started attacking the body’s own tissues.
In the case of rheumatoid arthritis the body attacks the joint lining causing pain, swelling and
restricting movement. The common symptoms for rheumatoid arthritis can tend to come and go with irregular
frequency but often worsen through the winter months.
Common Symptoms for Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a condition that affects the cartilage. The cartilage is a tough, rubbery
substance that caps the ends of bones within a joint preventing them from rubbing and grinding together.
In the case of osteoarthritis the cartilage deteriorates and becomes dry, cracked and rough. If the cartilage wears
down completely then the bones within that area will eventually grind together causing a great amount
pain.
Symptoms of osteoarthritis may include stiffness and pain, swelling, warmth and tenderness around
the joint and also cracking or popping when the joint is moved. When referring to osteoarthritis it may be split
into two categories which are primary and secondary.
Primary osteoarthritis is caused when the body can no longer keep up with its natural repairing of
cartilage wear and tear which is why the condition is common with people over the age of sixty five.
Secondary arthritis is usually triggered by a trauma such as a broken joint or
from a fall.
